BAREBACK PORN

http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2009/12/21/exclusive-eurocreme-ceo-speaks-to-pinknews.co.uk-about-the-bareback-porn-debate/

Bareback porn is in the news again. The health risks are obviously greater but the market prefers bareback. When HIV first hit the headlines in the 80s the porn industry turned to condoms and saw a subsequent fall in sales. The majority of the porn industry reverted back to bareback and sales increased. Gay porn continued to use condoms however until relatively recently. A few companies started to produce bareback films and become more adventurous and subsequently sales increased dramatically.
Critics however blame the bareback porn industry for an increase in bareback sex among gay men and point out the health risks to the performers and have made representation for governments to ban bareback porn production. In the state of California where the largest companies in the industry are based there are proposals to impose condom use on the industry.
The porn industry is opposing this because they fear that sales will drop and what is now a multimillion pound industry will collapse and the likelihood is that production will move to countries where condom use is not enforced or that a black market will grow to feed the demand for bareback porn.
Personally I have never worked in porn. I do know however that as both a personal preference and as a preference for my clients that bareback is the popular choice of porn. The reasons I think are that porn is fantasy and in your fantasy you do not use condoms. Sex is raunchy, dirty and exciting. In reality however as a sex worker (or just having casual sex) you practice safe sex although even here debate rages about enforcing the use of condoms for oral sex among prostitutes. I personally do both oral sex with and oral sex with out depending on who I am with and on my own assessment of the risk. I refuse to be told by a union or a manager or a government how I should have sex consensually with another consensual adult in areas where the risks are very low. If I want to be risk free there are other jobs that I could choose.
With regard to porn I think that there are still choices with in the industry with regard to condom use or not. Adults choosing to work in porn should make a choice based on their own assessment of the risks involved. I have an aversion to state interference in a free market which the sex industry epitomises perhaps better than any other industry. I fear that when the state interferes as in prostitution in Holland that you create opportunities for illegal markets to operate where there are little or no controls or regulations on safety. This is bad for the sex worker because inevitably they are markets controlled by criminals rather than sex workers.
I take a libertarian view. Governments and even unions have a role but that should be to educate both sex workers and the public and to provide protection from abuse and coercion. It should not be about enforcing rules upon consenting adults who are able to make their own choices. Don’t over regulate the sex industry because it does not work and creates opportunities for exploitative markets to develop which are not good for anyone.
